The history of Rock Steady Boxing
Rock Steady Boxing started in Indiana in 2006 when an attorney with Parkinson’s chose boxing training as part of his regimen. After seeing dramatic improvements in his health, agility and daily functioning, he started the program to help other people fight back against Parkinson’s. The organization created a network of affiliates to take the program worldwide.
Meet the coach
Beat PD founder and owner Karen Johanson entered the world of fitness specifically to help people with Parkinson’s after seeing the devastating impact of the disease on her father. When she discovered Rock Steady Boxing, it was an obvious fit with her experiences in martial arts and action sports. Weeks after attending training camp in Indianapolis, she opened the first Rock Steady Boxing affiliate in the Pacific Northwest and only affiliate in Washington state. After starting the program, she became aware of other needs facing PwPs and their caregivers, and created Beat PD, an umbrella organization designed to help battle Parkinson’s via holistic health tools, with the assistance of other wellness professionals.
